Dollar Lake Fire Renamed the Nine Million Dollar Lake Fire

by Liz Warren

Now that the smoke has settled with a weekend of rain in the mountains the Dollar Lake Fire should be under control and the firefighters are doing a happy dance. Locals feel we dodged a bullet with the Hood River fire hoping over to our side of the mountain heading towards the Bull Run, Portland's watershed, and the huge BPA power lines hanging along LoLo Pass Road. Around 300 homes were threatened. Smoke hung in the valley and ash covered homes up LoLo Pass we are all relieved. Now the work begins on understanding how this fire blew up so fast and cost as much as it did, around $9,000,000!

Dollar Fire Closes LoLo Pass and Campgrounds

by Liz Warren

It's a hazy day near Mt. Hood today with the Dollar Fire clouding up our skies on this Labor Day weekend. This fire originated from the North side from a lightening strike near Cooper Spur. Yesterday it crept up to Cathedral Ridge with strong East winds whipping down our canyons. Limbs were dropping  and power was knocked out for some local residents. Friends up LoLo Pass Road  had ash raining down on their home all afternoon.

Many campers and horse campers were told to leave our local campgrounds-McNeil and Riley Horse Camp, Lost Lake. The Pacific Crest Trail is closed too. Check details on camp areas that are closed.

Hood to Coast Relay This Friday!

by Liz Warren

Are we ready for this Friday? As a local resident who has witnessed 30 Hood to Coast relays passing through our area, the radar goes up for this event each year and the mass of vans, wacky people, and chaos it brings to our stretch of Hiway 26 from Timberline Lodge to Sandy.

This is the 30th anniversary of the run! 15,000 runners run 200 miles from Timberline Lodge in Government Camp to Seaside at the Oregon Coast. This is the largest relay event in the world as far as numbers of participants including walkers and high school groups totaling 21,000!

The very first Hood to Coast Relay was in 1982 and had eight teams that ran from Timberline to Kiwanda at Pacific City, South of Seaside.

The charity of choice is the American Cancer Society.

Check out details on this official web site.

Please be careful and watch for runners and vehicles on the road!
